Last week, Dr Biniam Bedasso, Research Fellow with the global education team at the Center for Global Development (CGD) and coach of team Ghana for the Building Public Finance Capabilities for Nutrition (BPFCN) programme was in Accra to check on the progress that his team has made since the mid-term review workshop held in May 2025. The Ghanaian team aims to: ‘Identify policy and public financial management (PFM) solutions to improve the nutritional quality of the Ghana School Feeding Programme.’
CABRI’s flagship BPFC programme, recognises the importance of stakeholder engagement and multi-sectoral partnerships in building an authorising environment. The BPFCN programme brings together different ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) working on nutrition projects for enhanced collaboration with the Ministry of finance, as the lead ministry for the financial management of government affairs.
The Ghanaian team comprises of officials from the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection and have been consulting key stakeholders on various initiatives to strengthen the programme’s monitoring and reporting systems. Although progress has been slowed by challenges in accessing the necessary data, partly due to government reshuffling, they are making headway in pinpointing key bottlenecks that could be addressed in the short term to enhance programme performance.
This coming September, CABRI will bring together country-teams Ghana, Liberia and The Gambia for the progress review workshop in South Africa to further enhance cross-country learning and exchange. The workshop will also enable the country-teams to set out new objectives beyond their completion of the programme.
Ghana is one of the six founding member countries of CABRI.
The BPFCN programme is funded by the EU and BMZ and implemented by GIZ.
