Liberia, CABRI member country since 2013, is amongst the three countries participating in the Building Public Finance Capabilities for Nutrition (BPFCN) Programme
Last week, Teboho Mohai, Public Financial Management (PFM) Specialist, CABRI, was in Liberia’s capital Monrovia to track the progress of the team since the mid-term review workshop. During his visit, the team held a productive working session with Dr. Bedee Gbozee, Director of Nutrition, to review and refine a proposal to the Minister of Health aimed at securing improved domestic funding for nutrition. Consultations were also held with the Department of Social Protection, the Food and Agriculture Organisation, and the World Health Organisation, to gather inputs and explore avenues for collaboration. Recognising the importance of advocacy, the team further engaged with the Scaling Up Nutrition Civil Society Alliance of Liberia to strengthen efforts in mobilising support for nutrition initiatives.
The in-country visit forms part of CABRI’s flagship BPFC Programme, which recognises the importance of stakeholder engagement and multi-sectoral partnerships in building an authorising environment. Team Liberia comprises of representatives from the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture, as well as the Liberia Standards Authority and the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement Secretariat.
Using the problem driven iterative adaptation (PDIA) approach, the three BPFCN participating countries - Liberia, Ghana, and The Gambia - aim to tackle problems at the intersection of public finance and sector financing. Next month, the teams will convene in-person for the progress review workshop to share achievements, bottlenecks, and their next steps beyond the programme.
The BPFCN programme is funded by the EU and BMZ and implemented by GIZ.
